Labor Day fun facts and History!

by Randy Byrd

As we approach the end of summer, Labor Day weekend provides a much-needed break from our busy lives. The holiday is celebrated on the first Monday in September and honors the American labor movement and the contributions that workers have made to the strength, prosperity, laws, and well-being of the country. This year, we celebrate Labor Day on September 4th.

The history of Labor Day dates back to the late 19th century when the labor movement was gaining momentum in the United States. The idea of setting aside a day to celebrate workers was proposed by Peter J. McGuire, a labor leader and cofounder of the American Federation of Labor. The first Labor Day was celebrated on September 5th, 1882, in New York City, and it became a federal holiday in 1894.

Today, Labor Day weekend is synonymous with barbecues, picnics, and beach vacations. It is a time to relax with family and friends and enjoy the last few days of summer before the school year starts and the weather begins to cool down.

If you're looking for something to do this Labor Day weekend, here are some fun facts and ideas:

1. The first Labor Day parade was held in New York City in 1882 and featured 10,000 workers.

2. According to AAA, more than 34 million Americans traveled 50 miles or more from home during the Labor Day weekend in 2019.
